This artist is the son of a Groote Eylandt woman and a man from the Djambarbingu tribe in north eastern Arnhem Land. His early life was divided between the two locations, and when his father taught him to paint aspects of his history and religion he depicted both his mother's and his father's "dreamings".

Nowadays he spends his time at Lake Evella, about 130 Kilometres inland for the Gulf of Carpentaria, still visits Groote Eylandt spasmodically. It was here that he caught two saw tooth fish and decide to paint them. They are a very rare species and the only other person who occasionally paints one is Gerry Blitner, a famous Groote Eylandt artist.

Weningmurra is regarded as on of the most outstanding painter s at Lake Evella, and his bark paintings are eagerly sought after.
